Note: The US Navy put no restrictions on me about what I should say or how I should present what I learned on this trip. Other than making sure my footage was cleared for Operational Security, I am free to say whatever I want about this experience.
Another note: The Navy did not ask me to provide a link to their website (or do anything for that matter), but I’m going to provide a link because I want smart people to become submariners. The US Navy continues to provide stability and security in ways no other organization on earth does. There are tons of interesting career opportunities out there that I never knew about:
The US Navy has several options such as engineer, pilot, submariner, logistics, accountant, medical doctor, and even Public Affairs specialist. I continue to be impressed by people that I meed who spent time in the Navy. I worked with various people during the course of filming this video and they were all top notch. www.navy.com/

Thank you for taking the time to watch this video. I'd also like to thank the US Navy Public Affairs Officers who helped coordinate this. After clearing the video for OPSEC, they did not limit my creativity in anyway whatsoever. I decided to make a video about the Command Structure on the submarine so we had a better foundation moving forward in the Submarine Deep Dive. This video is just the beginning! I have some incredible things to show you as a part of the deep dive. Please consider subscribing for those. I'm most grateful to people who go the extra mile and support Smarter Every Day on Patreon. It's a super big deal because it brings stability to Smarter Every Day in ways that's hard to describe. In this case, I had to buy a plane ticket to the Arctic on relatively short notice. If you'd like to become a Patron, I'd greatly appreciate it. Destin, if you enjoyed _Thunder Below!_ I'd definitely recommend _Blind Man's Bluff_, a book which dives into top secret submarine mission pulled off by both sides (though mostly the US side) during the Cold War. It's an excellent read, and talks about operations you simply will not hear about anywhere else.

Risk management and pure courage are with you every waking moment onboard. Thank you USS Toledo for your sacrifice. Carry on.

I remember hanging out with my ex, a submariner, on our Oberon class subs back in the late 80's. THIS sub is massive in comparison. In fact there IS no comparison. Aust. subs have gotten bigger & better but with security these days, my being on board would never happen but I dont even think they bothered telling me where I couldn't go. Times have changed. I spent quite some weekend postings as a young adult on bases & ship here & there but there is nothing like a submarine. It really does take a special type of person to serve on them & remain sane. LOL Look forward to more in the series.

You've opened a can-o'-worms here, Destin. There's a friendly revelry between "surface" and "sub-surface" sailors. If you don't give equal time to the surface Navy there's going to be a lot of disappointed sailors out here. You may have to request a similar visit to live aboard an aircraft carrier or destroyer for a few weeks. I'm anxiously awaiting the rest of the videos that come out of this experience.

Do you have to keep addressing them with "sir" if you are just a civilian?

Dag siden
David Jack
David Jack

No, not at all. As a civilian he is not required to address anyone by a title. Your average citizen would certainly address an officer by "Sir" or "Ma'am". Destin is from Alabama and, in the southern US states, it's a lot more common to address just about anyone you don't know as sir or ma'am. Not to suggest other regions don't do this, but it's a lot more common where he's from.

1. Interesting video as always 2. Dustin’s definition of enlisted personnel is basically what is on the ASVAB website verbatim 3. Doesn’t take a genius to see that the XO in the chief’s quarters is content control and his presence during the filming is not haphazard. 4. No females on board so they had an after the fact interview over zoom with a submarine force female who was actually a civilian at the time and who happened to be aware of gender neutral policies coming to the sub force. 5. The consistent theme in the video is everyone onboard is valued although it’s clear the military has a clearly defined hierarchy and is not a flat organization. Enjoyed the video on a superficial level but let’s be real this is recruitment because no real content. Why else would a nuclear sub allow a YouTuber on board. This is no different than tours provided for those who visit North Korea - completely controlled. Not saying Dustin should have all access but consider this before you join the military!
