I thought this was a well written break-down of different shapes: www.saraheberle.com/understanding-the-various-shapes-of-trimmer-line/
It’s interesting that so many different companies have their own proprietary shape etc, but I can’t find any scientific research to back any of it up. Fascinating!

How does power come off a wire to make radio waves. AM vs FM difference? And what is electricity made of and can you skip the conversion of potential energy into kinetic to then spin a motor.

I'm an Aussie and I've never heard anyone call it a strimmer? We have two types?, a whipper snipper (household grade line trimmer) or a brush cutter (heavy duty commercial grade usually with a steel blade for cutting thick grass, small trees and bushes)

Calling it a whippa snippa is just another example of Australian badassery. Everything dangerous and destructive there has the cutest freaking name. A “roo” can literally kick the poo out of you, the “outback” is a completely misleading term for a landscape of certain death and their spiders are the size of chihuahuas. I have seen one eat a POSSUM, people! Hats off to their unwavering spirit of making the dangerous things in life seem not just completely normal, but somehow adorable. I on the other hand fear my own ceiling fan.

I wouldn't say that any of the strings actually cut the grass but rather pulverise it. That being the case, the only thing that will make a real difference to most people is which one lasts the longest so I think you should run a test of durability instead of cut quality.

It comes down to weight and density of the plastic. The heavy will last longer but pick up debris and fling it back at you as well as remover the bark from your trees. Lighter line cuts better, will not eat bark and easier on your trimmer motor to spin up.

Star, all the way. Been using it for over 20 years since first trying it out. Cut acres and acres with it. The one drawback is it really grabs obstacles like rocks (rips off fresh line too quickly), fencing, etc. and pulls very hard on the cutter yanking it sideways. With a 50cc engine on mine going near flat out, it gives your arms a hard yank and, if it's a fence, grabs hold in a flash, giving you no choice but to immediately let go of the throttle to free it. So, one develops very careful techniques around wire fences and rocks. In Oz we call it a whipper snipper although I usually call it a line trimmer (when using trimming line) or brush cutter (when using the blade).

You should enlarge each line shape (scaled) to about the size of a baseball bat. Then you could do airflow tests (like with smoke). Perhaps you could do other experiments to see how much force it takes to cut a control tensioned item, maybe scale the tension of grass, etc. Also wondering if those other weed eater attachments are actually better than string. Science that up too.

Strimmer for us in UK. I'm going to say the star one stays so stable giving the best cuts as its similar to a golf balls dimples (or a bowers and wilkins speaker port with dimples for smoother airflow and avoid port chuffing) in flight in that it has more edges that it moves through the air smoother keeping it more stable and then the profile combined with that makes a cleaner cut.

Some of these strings leave your wee motor breathless, might cut well, but leave no power reserves. This can lead to the premature death of the said device through over torquing, much the same as a boat with a propeller just a little big. Over torque can steal many hrs from motors while others wise giving good service. These strings are all good on the bigger ones but the wee ones might be struggling with some of the higher wind affected lines. My 2 cents worth.

I think it's interesting that you fixed the grass taught, since grass is usually floppy when you cut it in the yard. Maybe this test isn't as representative as it could be? What if you left a rectangle of grass grow along your drive way, then did a slow-mo footage of cutting regular grass with the weed-cutter on the cart?
